Basilica of Santa Margherita

A 14th-century, baroque-adorned jewel in the Cortona hills

Standing upon the hills of Cortona and surrounded by a breathtaking landscape, the Basilica of Santa Margherita is a place of artistic and spiritual riches, in an embrace of history and faith. Originally built in the 14th century, the basilica suffered several changes over the centuries, taking on its present appearance in the 19th century. It stands on the site of the former Church of St Basil, restored by Santa Margarita herself, who spent her last years of life here. After her death in 1297, a new church dedicated to the saint was erected, designed by Giovanni Pisano.

The façade, embellished with a 14th-century rose window, opens to an interior rich in works of art. The three naves house Baroque frescoes and valuable statues, including those of St Francis and St Clare by Giovanni and Amalia Duprè.

In the centre of the basilica, the high altar holds the urn with the body of Santa Margherita. A 14th-century funeral monument, attributed to Giovanni Pisano, and a wooden crucifix of great historical and religious value complete the furnishings.

The Basilica of Santa Margherita is not only a place of worship, but also a panoramic point, from which to admire the beauty of Cortona and the Valdichiana. An experience not to be missed for those who wish to immerse themselves in the history, art and spirituality of this land.
