Cassero and Tower of Castiglion Fiorentino

Two symbols of this hamlet in Valdichiana Aretina

A dive into history

Climbing up the steps that lead to the Cassero is a time-travelling journey to the past, a full immersion inside epoch-making history of Castiglion Fiorentino, from the late Etruscan and medieval period to the modern age.

The Cassero Tower, symbol of the village, with its distinctive appearance, stands proudly, guardian of centuries of history.

The first traces of settlement in the Cassero area date back to the 8th century B.C., when the Etruscan civilisation established its dominion there. Over the centuries, the Cassero developed and transformed, becoming a military control castle from the 11th century onwards, watching over ancient and important road routes, far from the swampy areas but close enough to exploit the rich fishing resources.

Inside the castle, around 1350, the Casseretto was raised, a fortification whose walls and tower remain today. The tower, about 35 metres high, offers a breathtaking view over the Valdichiana and the ancient village of Castiglion Fiorentino.

A village to experience and discover

The Cassero is the beating heart of the Maggio Castiglionese, a Medieval festival where participants in period costumes, scenic decorations and an evocative fireworks show bring the village back to life.
