Set in the rolling hills of Tuscany, near Lucignano, is Castello del Calcione, a 2400-hectare estate that encompasses an ancient village, an art museum and an oasis of peace surrounded by nature.
The castle, dating back to the 14th century, was an important military outpost, later converted into a noble residence by the Lotteringhi della Stufa family, who still own the estate, and is now dedicated to agriculture. Its mighty walls and large rooms tell stories of battles, intrigue and Renaissance splendour.
The Calcione Castle houses an art museum of rare beauty. Among the most precious works is the glazed terracotta coat of arms by Luca and Andrea della Robbia, a masterpiece of Renaissance art. The museum also houses paintings, sculptures, weapons and period armour. Next to the castle is the church, a jewel of the 18th century, whose interior features frescoes by Luigi Ademollo.
An oasis of peace and nature
The Calcione is also a true paradise for nature lovers. Lush forests, crystal-clear lakes and scenic trails offer the opportunity to experience wine tasting, truffle hunting, mountain biking and many more. Restored farmhouses can also be found inside the estate, where guests can stay in an atmosphere of peace and relaxation.
The Castle has its own stables as well, offering guests a unique experience.
Events and activities for all
The Castello del Calcione is a centre of culture and events. Concerts, exhibitions, tastings and educational workshops are organised throughout the year. The estate is also an ideal venue for weddings, receptions and meetings.
