The history of the Castello di Gargonza
The earliest traces of the castle date back to the 10th century, when it was a simple military outpost. Over the centuries, it underwent several modifications and extensions, assuming its current form in the 16th century. Among the illustrious personalities who have stayed there is Dante Alighieri, finding refuge there in 1302. Even today, the atmosphere of the castle recalls that ancient era, with its stone houses, narrow cobbled streets and panoramic views over the valley.
In the midst of the 17th century, a well-organised farmstead was established, cultivated in sharecropping on a vast area of nine hundred hectares. When agriculture declined and the exodus from the countryside, sharecropping ceased.
Following a prosperous period, the castle underwent a constant and inexorable decline until the 1970s, when Roberto Guicciardini Corsi Salviati began a careful restoration of the buildings, paying particular attention to the village from a historical point of view.
An ancient village that lives
The Castello di Gargonza is more than a place of memory, rather a living and pulsating hamlet.
Belonging to the Corsi Salviati family since 1696, the ancient dwellings have been transformed into cosy flats, part of a scattered hotel offering a unique and suggestive experience.
In 1972, the restoration of the ancient oil mill allowed the hamlet to host music and theatre courses. The castle estate is still farming, producing fine wines and olive oil. The castle farm is organic and uses sustainable production methods. The products, such as wine, olive oil, honey and jam, can be purchased on site or tasted in the castle restaurant.
A place for unforgettable events
The Castello di Gargonza is an ideal location for weddings, banquets, conventions and meetings thanks to the vast premises and acres of woodland surrounding it. The evocative indoor halls and large outdoor spaces offer a unique setting for charming events. The tranquillity and beauty of the hamlet also make it perfect for a romantic weekend or a family holiday dedicated to relaxation and well-being. The castle also offers the possibility of organising special events, such as wine and olive oil tastings, cooking classes and nature treks.
