Castello of Montecchio Vesponi

A Medieval jewel well preserved over time

The Castle of Montecchio Vesponi towers over the Tuscan hills, nestled between Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona. A fairy-tale architecture silhouetted against the sky, a treasure chest of history, legend and charm.

Dating back to the 10th century, the castle has kept its ancient charm intact. Its 263-metre crenellated walls, still preserved today, and its 30-metre high tower make it an emblematic example of medieval military architecture. A place out of time, where a magical and surreal atmosphere is breathed in.

The name 'Vesponi' seems to be a contraction of the surname 'Guasconi', an Arezzo family that owned it in the 10th century, when the castle was first fortified on the site.

Disputed between Arezzo and Florence for centuries, the castle became a Florentine stronghold in 1289. In the 14th century it belonged to the legendary mercenary captain John Hawkwood, known in Italy as Giovanni Acuto, immortalised by Paolo Uccello in a fresco inside the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. After his death in 1394, his wife Donnina Visconti sold the castle to Florence.  In the 19th century, after various vicissitudes, the Fattoria Granducale and the castle itself were acquired by the banker Giacomo Servadio.

In 1979, the majestic fortress found new life after being abandoned for years, as it was purchased by the current owner, Orietta Floridi Viterbini. Her commitment and public funding support ensured a complex process of recovery and restoration.

In 1986, Montecchio was selected to be included in the prestigious 'Castles of Italy' stamp series, confirming its status as a historical and architectural jewel. In 1992, the Queen Mother of England, Elisabeth Bowes-Lyon, visited this enchanting fortress, enhancing its prestige even further. In 1999, Montecchio was officially included in the Golden Roll of Historical Residences of Italy, confirming its status as an important historical and cultural attraction.

In recent times, the complex has undergone additional major restoration work, specifically the recovery of the watch tower and the 14th-century keep, while archaeological research is still underway. The latest renovations offer a unique opportunity to visit the castle, being sourrounded by the history and beauty of this magical place. An unforgettable experience for lovers of the Middle Ages, fantasy and history in general.

The Castle of Montecchio Vesponi is located in a strategic position, ideal for exploring the Val di Chio and its treasures. A few kilometres away are art cities such as Castiglion Fiorentino, Cortona and Arezzo.

Today the Castle of Montecchio Vesponi hosts concerts, literary events and guided tours, which can be booked by contacting the Associazione Incastro.
