The Valdichiana Aretina, traditionally a crossroads of cultures and histories, has seen many illustrious personalities pass through it over the centuries, notably that of St. Francis of Assisi. From Anghiari, on his pilgrimage back to Assisi, he made several significant stops in the Valdichiana, including the municipalities of Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona.
Castiglion Fiorentino welcomes visitors with its ancient Cassero and the majestic medieval walls surrounding the picturesque Montecchio Vesponi Castle. Cortona represents the last Tuscan stage along St. Francis’ route and offers places full of spirituality and history, such as the Church of St Franics and the Basilica of St Margherita, next to an ancient Franciscan convent.
Along the Via di Francesco, it is another important stage, Le Celle Hermitage, immersed in nature and located in a cove of Mount Egidio, a place full of peace and spirituality. Pilgrims, spiritual path lovers and anyone wishing to explore the beauty of nature through a sacred journey are welcome to take this suggestive itinerary along the Valdichiana Aretina, a land of extraordinary beauty and authenticity.
