Museums In Castiglion Fiorentino

Municipal Archaeological Museum and Art Gallery

The Museum System of Castiglion Fiorentino offers a wide range of cultural experiences, enriched by state-of-the-art layouts that guarantee optimal enjoyment of the exhibits for all visitors. Distributed in the heart of the village, the museums allow visitors to discover the main artistic and historical treasures of Castiglion Fiorentino.

Archaeological Civic Museum

This fascinating museum itinerary, inaugurated in 2001, covers a time span from the Bronze Age to the 18th century, offering an overview of Castiglion Fiorentino's most significant historical phases. The five rooms house artefacts found in the area, including the extraordinary reconstruction of a portion of the roof of the Etruscan Sanctuary, testimony to the ancient Etruscan origin of the town and found in the Cassero area.
Particularly noteworthy are the bronze artefacts from the 'Brolio and Montecchio Deposit' (550-500 B.C.), found in the Etruscan site of Brolio-Melmone, the commercial centre of the Clanis. The museum, which boasts multimedia sections, has opened a medieval area containing valuable majolica since 2008.

Municipal Art Gallery

Located in the charming church of S. Angelo al Cassero, the Pinacoteca di Castiglion Fiorentino houses works of great artistic value. Among the masterpieces on display are paintings by Bartolomeo della Gatta such as the 'Stigmata di San Francesco' and the 'San Michele Arcangelo', together with other works by renowned artists such as Margaritone d'Arezzo, Taddeo Gaddi with his '14th-century Majesty', Giovanni di Paolo and Jacopo del Sellaio. The exhibition is enriched by splendid examples of medieval and Renaissance goldsmithing, including the Holy Cross, rich in precious stones and containing a splinter of Christ's crown and a thorn, as well as the reliquary bust of Saint Ursula, depicting the saint from Cologne.
