Located on the ground floor of the charming Palazzo Comunale, formerly the seat of the ancient Tribunal and its prisons, the Lucignano Civic Museum invites visitors to discover the most precious and fascinating works of art in the town, immersing them in its rich history and art.
Two paintings by Luca Signorelli, including the evocative 'Madonna and Child with Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata', along with other works by 14th-century Sienese painters and two pairs of coffin heads from the 17th-18th centuries are among its gems.
The real jewel of the museum, on display in the sumptuous hearing room of the ancient tribunal, is the Tree of Life. This stunning piece of Tuscan goldwork, also known as the Albero d'Oro (Golden Tree), is a rare example of a reliquary, the intricate work of which took no less than 120 years. Decorated with coral and vine leaves, the tree contains the metaphor of Christ's life in its three phases - origin, passion and glory - as described in the Lignum vitae, a mystical composition by Bonaventure of Bagnoregio..
