Diocesan Museum of Cortona

Home to some of the most important masterpieces of art and history in Cortona

The Diocesan Museum of Cortona is one of the town's most precious artistic and historical treasures. It houses a splendid exhibition of ancient works of art from local churches.

Founded in 1945 by Bishop Giuseppe Francolini, the museum houses a priceless collection of works by masters such as Pietro Lorenzetti, Fra Angelico, Bartolomeo della Gatta, Sassetta and Luca Signorelli.

The museum opens its doors welcoming visitors with a Roman sarcophagus depicting the "Battle between Dionysus and the Amazons", dating back to the 2nd century A.D. Inside also other valuable masterpieces such as the "Madonna and Child", dated around 1336 and attributed to Niccolò di Segna, the "Shaped and Painted Cross" by Pietro Lorenzetti, dated around 1315, and the "Annunciation of Cortona" by Fra Angelico, dated around 1430, a true gem of the early Renaissance, followed by the Cortona Triptych. Also worth a visit is the collection of goldsmith's craft and vestments, where admire the "Chalice" by Michele di Tomè, with its translucent enamels, dated around 1370, and the "Vagnucci Reliquary" by Giusto da Firenze, dated around 1457.
