Many disputes and battles marked the modern age and forged the proud character of Marciano della Chiana, which is evident from the first glance.
The historical centre preserves intact the medieval castle structure with its defensive-military design: the perimeter and the rectangular geometric plan, the walls protecting the ancient village, today the beating heart of the town, and also access point to the impressive Clock Tower.
From defence to culture
Having abandoned its defensive function, the Marciano Tower has recently been renovated and returned to the community as a place to promote socio-cultural activities and creativity. Today, in fact, it is home to a lively multifunctional cultural centre at the service of the entire town. Several halls are available for meetings, workshops, concerts and even civil weddings: the large 'Leonardo da Vinci Hall' and the other halls named 'Giorgio Vasari', 'Cosimo de' Medici' and 'Vittorio Fossombroni'. Not to be missed is the panoramic walkway leading to the Terrace over the Valdichiana, where the splendid Tuscan valley can be admired in all its beauty. Inside the Tower we can find a model of the Battle of Scannagallo in 1554 between the Franco-Senese army and the Hispanic-Medicean army.
