The Via Romea Germanica

A 2000 km route from Stade to the Eternal City of Rome

The Via Romea Germanica is an itinerary that since 1236 has stretched over 2000 km, linking the German city of Stade to the glorious Rome. This ancient route, also known as the 'Melior Via', represents one of the main medieval routes in Europe, serving as a sacred connection between Germany and the Holy See.

Traced over the centuries by pilgrims, merchants, and travellers, it offers an exciting journey through breathtaking landscapes rich in history. The Via Romea Germanica crosses Germany from north to south, and touches Austria just before crossing the majestic Alps, to reach Rome, the Eternal City, at the end.

The route owes its existence to Abbot Albert of Stade, who in 1236, with upon the approval of Pope Gregory IX, set out on this long journey and meticulously documented every stage of it.

c Castiglion Fiorentino, with its enchanting Montecchio Vesponi Castle, which offers breathtaking views of the Valdichiana and Val di Chio.

Along the route, after a stop at the Sodo archaeological museum, the itinerary leads to Cortona, an authentic open-air museum steeped in history and spirituality. This charming village, much loved by St Francis of Assisi, welcomes travellers with its unique atmosphere, immersed in the peace of Tuscan nature.
